PAHIATUA NOTES
« A special meeing of the Pahiatua , Borough Council was held last week, when it was decided to proceed with e< the electric lighting scheme. A comprehensive report, submitted by Mr. n 6. Lauchlan, of Wedliiigton, was l< adopted. The estimated cost of the undertaking is slightly ovor £8000. A fi few months back, the ratepayers sane- f, tioned by a poll the raising of £10,000 for the scheme. The council's finance committee was authorised to make in- N quiries and obtain prices for a suit- ' able site. t The "Woodlands Hunt has arranged to bold its first totalisator meeting 3 next mouth on the day following the n Pahiatua Racing Club's Meeting. The > programme, which was drawn up this y week, includes seven events. The y amount proposed to be given in stakes S totals approximately £212. Mr. J. Ful- £ lor lias donated a handsome silver cup j for the Hunt Steeplechase. j From inquiries made it lias been as- £ certained that the recruiting movement is proceeding very satisfactorily, c and that this district has supplied more than its quota of men. Two f business men have volunteered, Cap- v tain C. E. Clifton, who is now m Egypt, and Mr. W. Bosworth, a, bootmaker, who is closing his shop, and ( will proceed to Trentliam with tho next batch. Mr. W. E. Collins, manager for the Pahiatua and Pongaroa branches of Messrs. Abraham and Williams, has also volunteered, and 1 Mr. J. Trevor Thomas, of the Hastings brancli, has been transferred to take up Mr. Collins's position. At the patriotic meeting in Pahiatua last week, convened for the purpose of considering ways and means of- raising funds to assist New Zealand wounded soldiers and their dependents, the president of the recruiting committee, Mr. G. Harold Smith, made feeling reference to the deaths of Lielit. H. R. Cowan, of Mangatainoka, and Private A. J. Priest, of Makuri. The late Lieut. Cowan, who was only 25 years of age, was very popular and well known throughout this district, and his death, which resulted from wounds received in the Dardanelles, brought home to many in this district the sadness of war and also the necessity for young men to enlist and serve their country. The annual social of the Pahiatua Fire Brigade was held on Wednesday evening. Long-service medals were presented to the following:—Lieut. J. Stokes (seven years' service), Branchman A. W. White (seven years), Foreman E. Howe (five years), and Fireman J, Donaldson (five years*. It was announced that Captain S. G. Wallis had completed 18 years' continuous service in the brigade, be having joined the institution in 1897.
