THE HOSPITAL SHIP

WILL VISIT WELLINGTON. Tho turbine steamer Maheno, which is being fitted out as a hospital ship for service in the Mediterranean, will probably not bo ready to sail as soon as was expected. The Dcfenco Minister stated yesterday that ho had 'hoped the ship would bo ready by Juno 20, but he was advised that sho would not be ready until two or three days after that date. Arrangements were being made, he 'aid, to allow the people at the [;orts visited by tho ship to look .lver her. Ho had been asked oil behalf of the Patriotic Society in Dunedin to throw the ship open for inspection at l'ort Chalmers, and allow the society to mai e a chargo for' admission. He did not feel inclined to allow any charge to bo mado for viewing a ship that belonged to the nation by tho Patriotic Society or anybody elso, but the ship would bo open lor the public to view during ft special day, under the organisation of the Defence Department. In Wellington the day after the hospital ship arrived fte would be open to the public, but for that day only. A very large part of tho equipment would have to jp m board here, involving a deal «»* work, and for this reason it would be 1 impossible to .tllow the public to go tin board during more than one: dav.
