Slackness of work on the waterfront has been the j || cause, to a great extent, of the exist- 1 a ing unemployment. The Department ; i. has been able to offer work on the roads 1 s and railways to all applicants used to 1 heavy manual labour. There appears to 1 bo a decided disinclination on the part 1 of married men to leave the city. It • can be fairly deduced that if anything ' the unemployment amongst unskilled : labourers during May is no greater this year than last. Of the 332 applicants , who registered, the Department assist- i ed 222 to work: 144 to private employ--3 ment and 78 to Government works. Of i s the total, 73 are married and 149 single - j men, with 209 dependents. Forty came ' , from the North Island, 32 from the ■ South Island, 26 from the Common- ; wealth, 106 from Great Britain, and 18 j from other places. In addition, 11 wives , and 5 children were assisted to join 1 j their relatives." ' j 5 Sixty-three men applied to the Labour < x Bureau for work last week. Twenty- £ four were sent to Government employ- j . ment and 27 to private employment. In ' . addition, about 30 men who had provi- £ 3 ously registered called at the bureau. ■ b The position is considered to be rather - better than ill tho previous week. Many of those who called are young men who . have enlisted and need work until they j 1 are ordered into camp. _ The majority . . of married applicants still decline to 1 leave the city. The Department has j 5 authority to send twenty men to public 1 i works. 1
