« THEFT OF JEWELLERY FR©M THE STEAMER WAHINE Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presidec over a sitting of the Magistrate's Courl yesterday. Charles Edmund, who is at present undergoing a sentence of six months' imprisonment for arson, pleaded guiltj to two charges of theft. One was the theft of a tio pin, valued at £5, from James Morris, chief steward of the Waliino, and the othor stealing a watch and chain and other jewellery, valued ai £9, from another steward. Arnold Batehelor, on the same vessel. The Magistrate remarked that thefts were fairly common 011 board ships. Accused would 1 bo sent to gaol for a month on tlie first charge and two months on tho second. GIVEN ANOTHER. CHANCE. Charles Wm. Hobday pleaded guilty tb stealing 12 pairs of socks, valued at los., from Davis and Clater. Chief Detective Boddam said accused was out of work at the present time, while he had never been before tho Court before. The Magistrate convicted accused and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon. STOLEN BEEF. Leslie Reddie and Wm. Stockbridge admitted stealing some 17$lbs. of beef, the property of the Wellington Meat Export Company. Mr. Evans, who appeared for the Meat Company explained that meat was frequently being stolen from the company's premises, and in the case under notice Stockbridge had handed the meat to Reddie. Mr. J. F. W. Dickson appeared for Reddie and pleaded for leniency. Reddie ,\vas fined 205., in default throe days' imprisonment,and Stockbrjidge was fined 405., or seven days. DISPUTE ABOUT LODGINGS. Harold Andrews was charged with using obscene language and assaulting Ed. Lander. He was defended by Mr. P. W. Jacksoli From the evidence it appeared that as tho result of an argument about lodgings for the night, Andrews struck Lander, a lodgmghouse keeper, and used the language complained of. at tho same time. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £3, in default one month's gaol, on tho first charge, and 205., or three days' gaol, for the assault. OTHER CASES. For using obsceno langago, Julia Scliultz was fined 205., with costs 7s. John Floyd was fined 10s with costs 75.. for creating a breach of the peace ill Tory Street. Walter Colo was fined 405., with costs 75., in default seven days' gaol, for procuring liquor for a prohibited person. INEBRIATES. For drunkenness, Joseph Thomas Barrett and Wm. Dennehy were each fined 205., in default three days' gaol, and Johanna Brown, Christopher Johnson, and John Morrison each Pned 10s., or 48 hours' imprisonment. Four first offonding inebriates were dealt with. For committing breaohes of their prohibition orders, Florence Ellon Neilson, George H. Tobin, and Lucy Mitchell were each fined 20a., with court costs 75.. in default three days' gaol. Similarly charged, Mary Irene Williams was fined 10s.. with costs 7s.
