NOTES AND COMMENTS

[By Glencoe.] Weights for the Hawke's Bay JVinter Meeting are due to-day. The Salvadan mare Salvia has been very consistent of late. In her last three starts she has filled the position of run-ner-up. Mr. T-hos. Cameron has been appoint- ' ed starter to the Pahiatua Racing Club. Owing to an injury to one of his joints it has been found necessary to spell Montana at Opaki. The defeat of Tatterley in the Farewell Handioap at Bllerslie is reported to have been very costly to his connections. The probabilities are that the bay son of Tatters is not yet at his beat, and he may improve considerably on this form next time he starts. Blucstone, who scored in the Farewell Handicap at Ellerolie yesterday, won the same event last year. Tact, who was runner-up, scored in the Members' Handicap on the opening day. There were two treble winners at tho Auckland Meeting. These were Loloma and Harbour Light. The latter proved that his other successes were not flukes by accounting for Corrie, who was a hot order in the Campbell Hurdles. The recent successes of Golden Glow. Cardiff, and Doggerbank show that apparently horses are never too old to win steeplechases. Very few horses race at the age this trio are doing, and that they can win in their turn does not say much for the class opposed to .them. The ICaramu trainer, S. Waddell, has a. great record in connection with the York Welter, run at the Ellerslio Winter Meeting. He has now won it threw years in succession, viz,, with Miscount and Haskayne twice. The English-bred stallion Brakespear, j who carried His Majesty's colours suo- ' cessfully on several occasions, has "been* I purchased by the New South Wales stud' i master, Mr. Hunter White. As a two- ] Sear-old the son of Spearmint and Guinea ] [en won a couple of important events, , and though his efforts were unrewarded with a victory last season he was placed ( in six of his efforts. 1 Not a little of Cardiff's success in th« j Steeplechase at Wingatui on Thursday was due to the artistic manner in which ' he was handled by L. Hagerty, says a ' southern writer. Sou'-Water's son Is 1 now about 15 years old, but has never 1 shown to such advantage as in tho 1 Wingatui race, though his schooling work 1 had not. been of a very satisfactory na- i ture. His dam, Kairaka, was got by Torpedo from Bayleaf by Pc-ter Flat; consequently Cardiff claims relationship tio such well-known performers as Advanco, „ Jortulla, Rosefcldt, and other members J of tho Sharkie family. • t Not a single Auckland-onned horse Is ( nominated at the Hawke's Bay Meet- t ing. .Evidently the northern owners think c the three days at Ellerslio will be enough r for them for some little time. . nuk djfPosejl of the All ; Black hlly Dnbb e to Mr. H. E. Trout- , beck. She will still remain in T. Quinhvans charge. ' An Auckland sportsman offered a fair ; prioe for General Webb before ho went ' tin c l ? n ' cs t the Maiden Steeplechase > at Ellerslie on Thursday, but no businoss j resulted. Ike same gentleman was also ' alter Aicomar without success. t The reported complete breakdown of ' alorecambe is.to be regretted, for in ad- L dition to robbing the horse of certain victory in the Great Northern Steeples il. also weakens the . already depleted ranks of steeplechasers in the Dominion 1 , t *'„ a J ne ®ting °f stewards of the Mas- , tcrton Racing Club on Saturday, it was decided to support the protest of the New i Zealand Racing Conference against tho ' proposal to increase the tax on totalisator 1 receipts. Mr. Arnold Weston, a well-known Pahiatua business man, has been appointed a joint secretary of the Pahiatua a Club and the Woodlands Hunt Club « h,E 6 ¥ ana \ at « Tr °tting Club's meeting c takes place, at Awapuni to-morrnw.
