STAR BOATING CLUB
<, ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT. The annual smoke concert of tho Stai Boating Club was held last night. Mr, A. S. Biss presided over an attendance of about fifty members. Occasion was also taken to welcome members of the club who havo returned from Samoa, and to farewell members leaving with the reinforcements. The principal toast of the evening, that of the Expeditionary Forces, was proposed by the chairman, who referred to tho joy that was felt by Britons in being associated with so many grand Allies. Although Now Zealand was furthest away from the Motherland, thoy had just «s many opportunities for assisting her. The war had brought home to all that it was their duty to try and improve the nation. Towards this end the sports clubs did a groat deal. Those members of the Star Boating Club who were going to tho front carried the good wishes and envy of all the club members. The club had every confidence in them to uphold tho good name of New Zealand. The toast was drunk with great enthusiasm. Several members of the Samoan force and the reinforcements responded. Winder, B. G. Wallace, C. C. Miles. V. C. D. Corrigan, J. A. Biss, R. J. Bird, W. Richardson, W. Copeland. V. P. I-loughton, I'. Ij. Ward, P. Muir. T. M'Lean. Tho presentation of certificates instead of prizes was made. The winners of tho prbses donated tho usual amounts expended on trophies to tho Belgium Fund. A lengthy toast list was gono through, and an enjoyable musical programmo was given by the club members.
