SELECTION OF OFFICERS
« PROMOTION FROM THE RANKS. The Minister of Defence informed a reporter yesterday that in future it might not be possible to adhere rigidly to the rule hitherto followed by which all commissions in the Expeditionary Force are given to Territorial officers recommended by officer commanding districts for the positions. The rule would still be observed, and commissions would still be given to suitable men recommended, but it would bo necessary to look to civilians to fill some of the positions. What he thought, was that a proportion of the officers would be drawn from tho noncommissioned officers at Trentham. Civilians would thus get their opportunity of proving themselves and earning their commissions. "I wish to say," said Mr. Allen, "that the officers who have come in, and who have gone away have as a ruin done very well indeed. This is true of the young officers as well as tho older men. But we have reached, a stage now where we have to exercise a little more caution."
