THE GREAT SAN RIVER STRUGGLE
ENEMY BEGINS A DISORDERLY RETREAT
Petrograa, May 31. A communique states: "On the front between the Pilica and the Upper Vistula we captured 209 officers and 8617 men between May 12 and 24. "The battle on the San is developing in our favour. AVe crossed the Lubaczovka and occupied tho village of Monaslerz, inflicting heavy losses. "On the Zaderewacz-Bolechov-Jaworow front we repulsed several attacks, and then assumed the offensive, capturing seven thousand prisoners and thirty quickfirers. 1 "The enemy has begun a disorderly retreat." ENEMY OBVIOUSLY SHORT OF AMMUNITION. J Pctrograd, May 31. Official. —"During the fighting between Gorlice and the Donajec, the enemy used 1500 guns before the assault, discharging seven hundred thousand projectiles in four hours, which number, it is estimated, would require a thousand wagons for transport. "On another position one of our commands received ten thousand bombs. "The Germans have exhausted the supply at Cracow and other fortresses, and the infantry is now obviously lacking the support of artillery."
HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORTS
The High Commissioner reports:—
London, May 31/3.15 p.m. "In the Baltic provinces on Friday, near Sawdenil, the Russians captured nine guns, seven machine-guns, prisoneis, and other trophies. "On the middle and lower Dubissa the onemy has renewed the offensive, and the Russians, in on Saturday beyond the river, stopped tho enemy from crossing. "In Galicia the battle continues. On Saturday the enemy evacuated the right oank of the River Lubaczovka. "The Russians successfully counter-attacked at Kalniko and Naklo, capturing three thousand prisoners, sixty officers, machine-guns, searchlights, and commissariat stores. _ ...... _
"The Russian offensive in the Dolina Valley compelled the enemy to evacuate the right bank of the Svitza. "Beyond the Dneister the Russians captured six hundred prisoners, seventy officers, and eight machine-guns."
London, June 1, 6.50 a.m. "In the Shavli region and the San; the fighting ie continuing to the Russian advantage. "Beyond the Dniester, between Stryj and Dolina, the enemy began a disorderly retreat. We took seven thousand, prisoners, and thirty quick-firers,"
