Lyall Scott (AVangamii), 3 balaclavas. Ladies' Hockcy. Chief interest in the ladies' hockey games at Karori Park on Saturday centred in tile encounter between Ramblers A and College. Ramblers had the bettor of the game right through, and were' the ultimate victors, -winning by 2 goals to nil. The scorers were Misses Pickering.and Edwards. Mr. G. Keall controlled ' the game.
In the other ladies' senior game, Huatahi —University, affairs were not nearly so evenly balanced, the former team being defeated by 10 goals to nil. The scorers in this game were Misses Mander (8), Campbell (2), Dobbyn (2), and' Blacken (2), Mr, Loader was the referee.
In the junior games, Technical School defeated University by 1 goal to nil. College A (3) defeated College B (0). Te Aro beat St. Augustine's by 1 goal to nil. Miss M. M'Kinnon was the scorer.
A fortner resident of Melbourne, Miss Alico Mercy- Varley, perished in the Lusitania disaster. She was the daughter of the late Mr. Henry Varley, a well-known preacher, and sister of Mr. Thomas E. Varley, of Melbourne. Miss Varley lived at Hawthorn for some years with her parents, engaged in scholastic work, but a number of years ago settled in America, associated with the late D. L. Moody, the world-famed evangelist, in his literary and educational enterprises at Northfield, Massachussets. Up to the time of her death she was editor of the "Record of Christian Work," one of the best-known religious journals in"America.
News has been recived of the death at Stanley Bay, Auckland, on May 24, of Mrs. Slartha Brand Prime, mother of Mr. W. L. Prime, of Napier. The deceased lady was one of. Auckland's early settlers, having arrived in the northern city with her husband (whom she survived by some 16 years) over fifty ycaTS ago. Tho late Mrs. Prime leaves four sons (Messrs. W. L. Prime, of Napier, and F. Prime, W. B. Prim©, and 11. Prime, of Auckland), 17 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
The Misses Newton, who, with _ Mr. Newton (Mildura) have boeit visiting Mrs. M'Duff Boyd (Hastings), left for Wellington yesterday.
Mr. and Mrs. Meredith and Mr. and Mrs. Toogood (Wairarapa) have been spending this week end in Napier on their return from a visit to Taupo.
Miss M'Carthy, the Principal Matron at the War Office, was the nurse who was with Lord Roberts in his last illness, and who nursed him up to the time of his death. Miss M'Carthy, it will be remembered, is an Australian,and just before war broke out had been appointed Matron-in-C'hief at the War Office. Miss M'Corthv has a sister who is driving a motor-ambulance in France, and a brother who has also placed his services at his country's disposal as a soldier. Tho Wellington Plunket Society, with the help of friends, has been, sowing baby garments for the British soldier and sailor children during the past three months. Before forwarding them to the Now Zealand High Commissioner, Messrs. Kirkcaldie and Steins are kindly showing them to-day (Tuesday).
