D. iionisby, tho Mayor of Carterton, in the course of his remarks, said they were all pleased to see that the old lighting spirit of the Britishers still lived to-day, as evinced by the prompt answer to tlio Emuiro's call. That two of their neiuhuours. Messrs. Gordon and Donbee, should be among those to volunteer was an honour the people of Parkvale wished to acknowledge, and they therefore wished Messrs. tfordon and Denbea each to accept, with best wishes for their safe return, n luminous wristlet watch, a razor, and a kangaroo strop. After hearty cheers had been given, "Soldiers of the King" and the National Anthem were sung with the utmost enthusiasm, and dancing then followed. Mr, W. O'Callaghan sang, and extras were played by Mrs. S. Rayuor. Miss Matson, and Mr. L. Mason. Supper was provided by tho I'arkvalo ladies, and the M.C.'s were Messrs. A. Booth, T. Teal, J. Johnson, J. Martin, and S. Raynor. Mr. T. Mauusell' was lion, secretary, and to him was also duo much of .tho success of the evening. Among those present_ were: Messrs. Cr. S. Pearson, F. Davies, H. {smith, J. Hewit, W. Nielson, E. Thomas, D. Fairbrother, J. Smith, and N. and 0. West, all ,of whom, in addition to tho /two already mentioned, had enlisted, For tho Hospital Ship. The Feathorston Tennis Club held a very successful dance on Friday evening in the Town Hall (writes our Featberston correspondent). The surplus funds are to bo devoted to the Hospital Ship Fund, Music was supplied by Miss Hodder ami Mr. Brown of Masterton, and visitors were present from Wellington and Napier, 'file-stage and the supper tables were decorated with quantities of flowers sent in by Mr. Alfred Matthews, of Wairougoniai. Miss Yiles was secretary, and was assisted b,y_Mi's. Wiclscns and Miss Walker. Extras were played by Misses Till, Vilos, Tait, Bisli, aliil Mrs. Sogers, of Wellington, and Messrs. M. H. Kendall and J. Daltou were M.GVs. The services of Messrs. C. T. Fciiwick and J-|i#:;;cs were much appreciated. The following additional subscriptions have been received: —Mrs. (i. H. Neale, £2 25.; Airs. C. O'Connor, £1 Is.; Mrs. Rose, £1; Terrace Congregational Church, £3 35.; Mrs. H. 0. Crawford, £1 Is.; Mrs. C. Slurry, "Wliaramii," Blenheim, has given i pair of blankets, and Miss Alcorn (Liberty's) 0 pairs of blankets and twelve pillows. Red Cross Fund Coif Match. The ladies of tlio Karori Golf Club hold the first competition of a series in aid of the Rod Cross fund to-morrow. Driving, approaching, and putting events are sot'down for this date;
Among the visitors staying «t Caul- j field House are Mr. Wurien (Aucklaud). Miss Cameron (Greytown), Miss Braitliwaite (Carterton), Mrs. BamficW (Dtuiedin). A meeting of the Rod Cross Entertainment Committee in. connection with the Carnival Queen was held, yesterdaj afternoon in Nathan's Buildings, Mr. BaiTatfc presiding. Arrangements _in connection with a lied Cross matineetea which is to be held in the' Towr Hall on June 10 wore discussed, ant also in connection with a concert which is to bo held oil Sunday, June 13, ii, the Town Hall. An excellent programme has been arranged for the occasion, and for the matinee toa on the 10th there will be many attractive l'ea- i tures provided.
The Misses Rutherford (Hikorangu), wlio have been staying at the Royal Oak. left for Auckland yesterday.
Mrs. Marshall and Miss Evelyn Marshall (Tutu Totara), vho have been staying at Miss Malcolm's left for Marton yesterday.

The annual meeting of the Presbyterian Orphanage and Social Service Association is to be held this evening at St. John's schoolroom, Dixon Street. The animal report will be submitted and addresses given or, the work. There will also be musical items given by. the orphans.
Mr. an'd Mrs. Wain wright (Napier) left for Sydney at the end of last week. Mrs. and Miss Evans (K.elburn) aro visiting Masterton.
Owing to pressure of sewing for -the Hospital Ship the Wellington Ladies' Golf Club is postponing the match for the lady captain's prize. This match, which was set down for June 2, at Heretauriga, will now be jilayed on Saturday, June 12, after arrival of the 9.4 a.m. train.
Contributions to the flower, pot plant and produce stall for No- 1, Red Cross candidate, will be gratefully received by tlie committee, and may be left at Nathan's Buildings. Grey Street; Mr. T. Smith, baker and pastrycook, Riddiford Street, Newtown; or Mrs. M'Whannell, 78 Moxham Avenue, Kilbirnio, until Wcdnesdav evening.; or at the stall, Newtown Park, on Thursday morning.
