NOTES AND COMMENTS

[By Glencoe.] In connection with the Otaki Maori Racing Club's Winter Meeting, which is to be held on June 3 (King's Birthday) and June i, paitrons are advised that trains leave Thorndon Station at 7.45 a.m., 8.J5 a.m., and 9.21 a.m. Return trains leave Otaki at 4.20, 4.10 p.m., and 5.35 p.m. Gampeador, who has an engagement in the Cornwall Handicap, will be Mr T. H. Lowry's sole representative ,it the Auckland meeting, which opens on June 3. It turns out that Addnought got cast in his box, and this was Itlie reason of his withdrawal from the Great Northern Steeplechase. There is an impression abroad that Multiply waa not 6een at his best at Wanganui, and that he will do much better at Otaki. His supporters say that the sandy course at Wanganui did not suit him, but against Ithis it must be remembered that when owned by Mr. C. J. Parker, he ran what was probably his best raco whon he finished second in the Jackson Stakes, run on tho same course. General Webb's showing behind Awahou in tho Second Hack Hurdles at Wanganui will draw attention to his prospects in the Maiden Steeplechase at Ellerslie on Thursday. The brown gelding is already a winner over country, having scored at Feilding at Easter. The writer received a telegram on Saturday stating thait the jockeys at Ellerslie on June 3 were donating ten per cent, of their riding fees towards the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, and the wish waa expressed that the riders alt Otaki and Wingatui on the same date would do likewise. The cause is & good one, and it is to be hoped that a generous response will be forthcoming. The racehorses Sauci and The Pole were shipped to Sydney on Saturday. They are on their way to Melbourne to join Tim Doolan in E. A. Connolly's stables at Caulfield. Jockey P. Tutehen, who is in ithe foremost rank of steeplechase riders in this country, has gone to Sydney to ride Scots Guard and Cheddar in their Australian engagements. A. J. M'Flinn is leaving from Auckland cut the conclusion of the Great Northern meeting. He will have the mount on Mr. G. L. Stead's jumpers. While chooling at Ellerslie on Friday the Great Northern Hurdles favourite Corrie had a fall, and narrowly escaped serious trouble. Coming at tho obstacle at tho head of tho straight, her feet slipped from under her, and she shot right under the rail on to the inside grass track. ' Fortunately the latter is about three feet lower than the hurdle track, which enabled the mare to get clear, and she escaped with a slight scratch on .the off fetlock. Her rider, M'Seveny, got a nasty shaking, and for a time it was feared he was seriously hurt, hut eventually he was able to get up and walked to tho enclosure. To commemorate one of the Allies' great victories King George has bestowed the name of Neuve-Chapelle on his yearling filly by Sunstar from Prim Nun. A southern writer says:—"lt is understood that both Palisade and Sister Eadius met with interruptions in their training whilst in Melbourne. Palisade struck himself whilst rolling, and had to b» stopped in his work a few days before racing at the Adelaide meeting, and Sister Eadius at one stage of the trip developed lameness. Both horses were fairly well taken care of by the handicappcrs, who apparently are not disposed to be lenient towards New Zealanders." "With reference to a statement that the English trainer, Hallide, ran horses at nine meotings on Easter Monday, "Le Sport Hippique" recalls that tho record is easily held by M. Lieux, that owner running horses at no fewer than 17 meetings on a particular Sunday in France. Three very smart sprinters in Tatterley, BimeteT, and Tyson are to meet in the Membefls' Handicap, five furlongs at Ellerslie, on Thursday. The Auckland jockeys, B. Deeley and J. O'Shea, will be riding at Otaki on Thursday and Friday. They will , return to Ellerslie for tho concluding day of ithe Great Northern meeting.
