AN ECHO OF THE RETREAT FROM HONS. (Rec. May 30, 11.10 a:m.) London, May' 29. Captan F. Gronfell. the first officer to win the Victoria Cross in the Great War, has been killed in Franco. Captain F. 0. Grenfell, of the Ninth Lancers, was wounded in both legs and lost two fingers during the retreat from Mons. Directly afterwards he saw that two guns were nearly deprived of their servers owiag to tile effects of shrapnel. The horses wore under oover near by, and Captain Grenfell said: "We will get the guns back." Regardless of wounds, he headed a number of men, haraessed the guns up and saved them. Ho w'a 3 ttien, taken to Ww Hospital.
