, The Royal Choral Society will give, its j first concert of the season in the Town , Hall on Tuesday next, June 1, when I l'ietro Mascagni's Italian opera "Cavalc leria Rusticana" will be performed, t The argunienteof the story, briefly told, is that Turiddn, returning to the Sicilian village of Racaga, finds his sweetheart Lola wedded to Alfio, tho muleteer, and, piqued at being jilted, i ho becomes reckless and betrays Saii- - tuzza, a pretty peasant girl with whom f he has been amusing 'himself. . Tiring i of her, and receiving encouragement 3 from his old lovo, he forms a liaison b with Lola. Santuzza, enraged to mady ness, informs Aliio of his wife's int fidelity. The two men meet and resolve . to fight to tho- death with knives, in £ Sicilian fashion. Retribution falls on - Turiddu, who is stabbed and dies ims ploring Santuzza's pardon. The differ- , out characters represented are: San- , turn (the soprano), Miss 151 sy Treweek; f Turiddu (the tenor, a young peasant), , Mr. W. E. Saunders; Lucia (contralt-o, t his mother), I*rs. Rosewarne; Alfio t (baritone, a carrier), Mr. Frank Cliarl--3 ton: Lola (mezzo, bis wife), Mrs. C. 1 0. Alcorn. Mr. W. S. Saunders, the tenor, will sing the "Siciliana" behind e the scene, with harp accompaniment. Y The performance will be under the s direction of Mr. Maughan Barnett. A f rehearsal, for chorus only, will be held at St. John's to-night. The box plan can be inspected at the Bristol Co., where 3s. and 2s. seats can be reserved.
