WAR DISTRESS COMMITTEE
» RECEIPTS AND EXPENDITURE. A meeting of the War Distress Committee was held yesterday. There wero present tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke, in the chair), the Rov. W. A. Evans, and Mr. W. H. Morton. Several applications for relief were fully investigated, and dealt with according to their merits. After the meeting tho Mayor said that the total receipts to the fund wero £356S 9s. 7d., and the expenditure to date £492 16s. 3d., leaving a- balance of £3075 13s. id. Ho added that, in view of the fact that tho war had been in existence for some ten months, it was very satisfactory that it had not been, necessary to expend the sum of £500 for alleviating cases of acute distress. He further stated that the utmost care was exercised in dealing with the fund, and careful inquiries wero made in connection with all applications to ascertain what degree of relief was neccssary. Although a certain amount had to bo extended in giving actual money to applicants, most of the committee's work, apart from assisting until Tents, was done by means of order forms.
