THAT DAIRY FARM
HOSPITAL BOARD ALLOWS OPTION TO EXPIRE. It will be remembered that at the last meeting of the Wellington Hos-. pital and Charitable Aid Board, the 'owners'of the dairy farm at Mungaroa, with whom the board had been negotiating with a view to purchasing, notified the board-that after May 20 the price ■ would bo raised by £500. Whatever the object was in naming a much larger price, for'., .the property than several members.,of; the board thought advisable to pay-, - it - did not bring the negotiations any closor to a sale. J.he board simply allowed, the date to come and go without taking action. This, said a member of l . ;tho board to a Dominion .reporters-yesterday, is>tant-a~ mount to dropping the idea altogether of acquiring a dairy farm for the Hospital. • There is -at ■ present some talk of endeavouring, to, come to some arrangement with the Government farm at Wereroa (Levin), but tliero are objections to getting the 'milk there on account of tho great distance from Wellington. At certain seasons of the year when the milk is particularly rich it is said that with the jolting of the train all the - way from Levin to the city butter would form. The milk at present supplied to the Hospital is said to be first-class. It is being supplied from tho Lower Hutt, and in order to ensure that it will not be tampered with on the journey to town each can cf milk is locked before it leaves the Hutt, and the only set of duplicate keys are held by the Hospital authorities at Newtown. The arrangement, which has been in operation for a fortnight past, works admirably, and ensures a. supply of the best' milk.
