The latest election figures show:—■. Labour 50 Liberal 22 Sis of the Ministry—Hon. D. F. Den, ham (l'remicr), Hon. W. H. Barnetf (Treasurer), Hon. J. W. Blair (Pubjic Instruction), Hon. Mr. Doughs (Minister without portfolio), Hon. Mr. Grant (Mines), and Hon. J. White (Agriculture) —appear to bo defeated. The Liberal defeats include Sir Robert Philp. LABOUR LEADER SENT FOR, (Rec. May 24, 11.5 p.m.) Brisbane, May 24. The latest returns have slightly im« proved the Liberal position, and indi* cato that 49 Labour and 23 Liberal members will bo returned, though tha number is still capable of alteration. Apparently the oiilv Ministers who will survive are Mr. Tolinie (Lands Department) . and Colonel llankino (Railways). The chances of the others apj. pear to be beyond hope. Recognising that the position is hopeless. Mr. Denliam (the State Premier) sent in his resignation and that of the Ministry. The Governor, on Mr* Denhiun's advice, sent> for Mr. Leader of the Labour Party, to form a Cabinet. . . Prominent politicians included, tbo opinion is that the disastrous debacle of the Liberals is chiefly due to two fao tors, the high cost of living, and the hostility of the people to the compulsory clauses of the Elections Act. A Socialist candidate, while the eleo tions were in progress, sustained 3 paralytic seizure, and died in a feTO hours. The following cablegram was dispatched last night to Mr. Ryan, Leader of the Queensland Labour Party, by Mr* P. Fraser, national secretary of the Social Democratic Party:—"New Zealand Labour congratulates Queensland workers on magnificent victory. P, Fraser, National Secretary. CERMAN CLUB AS MILITARY HOSPITAL. GOVERNMENT ACCEPTS. Sydney, May 24. The military authorities have accept-, ed the offer of the German Concordia Club house as a military, hospital. There is much adverse comment on the scheme. WHOLESALE INTERNMENTS DISAPPROVED. Sydney t May 24. The Hon. D. R. Hall (Attorney-Gen-eral) does not agree with the wholesale internment of Germans. He estimates that there are over 30,000 Germans m Australia, and their segregation would cost a million per annum. BRIBERY ALLEGATIONS UNFOUNDED. THE WHEAT ACT CHARGES. Sydney, May 24. Mr. Justice Ferguson, acting as s Royal Commission to inquire into the allegations of bribery in connection with the Wheat Acquisition Act, reports that the allegations are unfounded. CRITICISMS, QUESTION OF CENSORSHIP. Melbourne, May 22. The House discussed the censorship of Parliamentary criticisms, which, although censored for the newspapers, are permitted to appear fully in Hailsard. Mr. Fisher agreed to consult the Ot>position respecting the future policy. SHORTAGE OF SUGAR. A MONOPOLY OF SUPPLIES. Sydney, May 22. The Hon. D. R. Hall (Minister <jf Agriculture) stated that the Colonial and other sugar companies already had ordered shipments to meet the shortage. The selling prices depend on the remittance of the duty. Melbourne, May 22. The Hon. W. H. Hughes (AttorneyGeneral) admitted that wholesale houses in Melbourne did not possess 150 bags of sugar. The trade was entirely in the hands of the Colonial Sugar Company, which was restricting supplies. ANTI-CERMAN RIOT. MOB WRECKS A DATE. Sydnoy, May 23. The anti-German feeling in Newcastls reached a climax, a mob wrecking ft supposed Gorman cafe. The police dispersed the crowd. ENEMY CONTRACTS. Melbourne, May 22. In the Senate, the Enemy Contracts Annulment Bill passed all stages. GRAND PRIZE FOR WOOL. Sydney, May 22. Mr. Nielsen has cabled that the Australian wool exhibit at the Panama Exhibition has been awarded the grand prizo, with New Zealand second.
