THE REVOLT AT LISBON
HALF-HEARTED AFFAIR SUBMARINE ORDERED TO SINK WARSHIPS (By Telegraph—Press 'Assn.—Copyright,} (Rec. May 25, 0.35 a.m.) Lisbon, May 24. Details of the revolt at Lisbon prove that the oflicors -were without authority, and when they led their men into the streets to defend the Government the majority of tho soldiers surrendered ■without firing a shot. Tho attackers brought up artillery to tho Military School, and threatened to bombard it. The students surrendered; were made prisoners, and placed on wan ships. As the Chief of Police was being taken to the arsenal, a ruffian approached and shot him dead. Don Xavier do Brito (Minister of Marino) ordered the submarine Espa/dartc to sink the warships which were bombarding the Government offices. Tho commander refused, and also refused his own sailors' demands to shoot tho Minister. Hachado dos Santos was the hero of October 5. One hundred and ninety of his followers cntrenched themselves in a. brewery and put up a bravo fight until they were able to escape. Hachado i' still uncaptured. A mob sacked the leading Monarchist club houses.
