FRENCH CLUB
The ladies of the French Club the field at the meeting of the club OR Thursday night. To be sure, a gentle* mail occupied the chair, and another gentleman, Mr. Lattey, contributed, one of the items of the_ evenirt"'= pro- i ceedings, but the rest of tke use was i occupied by the ladies. The chairman, had the sad task of announcing that Mr. Stuart Menteath, the president of the club, had lost his son durihg the recent fighting at the Dardanelles, and the secretary was instructed to write a letter of condolence on behalf of the members. After this, Miss Rowley, played-a piece on the piano. Then followed Mr. Lattey's contribution, describing a visit to Belgium; Miss Gibson discoursed on "Why Women Are So Talkative, the Charm of Their Conversation, and the Disadvantages of Too Much Chattering"; Miss van Staveren gave a reading from Daudet's "Lettrea de mon Moulin." Finally, Mademoiselle du Bosson read eloquently, and in a way only a native-born French person can read, a series of speeches on the present condition of Belgium, liar sufferings, her heroism, and her determination to drive out the Germans. These speeches were delivered at the Hotel de Ville, Paris, last December, at the reception accorded to M. Carbon ds Wia-rt. Vice-President of the Belgian Ministerial Council. Votes of thanks >vero passed 1 to the different speakers, especially "to Mademoiselle du Bossoilj and the proceedings terminated.
