TRIMMING THE CORNERS

THE MAYOR ON (STY IMPROVEMENTS. In the course of his installation address the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) stated that one important work to be done in the City was the rounding off of certain abrupt corners, and he mentioned the corner of Ingestre and Cuba Streets (opposite Veitch and Allan's) as one of the corners that would sooner or later 1 have to be eased. In conversation with j a Dominion reporter yesterday, Mr. ' Luke stated that the property was one belonging to the Grace Estate", and that it had been offered to the City at Government valuation. It remained for the council to say whether that corner should be acquired for the improvement sngested, but personally he did not think there would be any hesitation on its part as to the course to be pursued. There were two or three other corners tho rounding off of which would bo a great improvement, not only in the.interests of the tramway service, but to traffic generally, for the more a corner of anycity street was rounded the more extensive was the view opened out from one street to tho other, and consequently there would be less 'likelihood of blocks in the traffic occurring at busy street junctions.

Incidentally the Mayor referred to the concluding phases of the widening of Willis Street. After tile setting back of the brick sliops to the north of Mercer Street, the only premises to be set back to the new alignment were tho old wooden shops between Pinny's and tho Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, and the corner section of the hotel mentioned. Tho shops could be set back at any timo now, but nothing further could be dona in connection with the setting back of the hotel until Mr. 31. Myers returned from America as the matter had been placed in his hands for negotiation. AATien the time came for making the alteration, provision would also be mad© for rounding off the corner well as setting the hotel front back to the now Willis Street p.lignment.
