DEATH PENALTY FOR AIDING THE ENEMY. . STRINGENT REGULATIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) Melbourne, May 20. New regulations under the War Precautions ■ Act provide for the infliction of the death penalty on civilians or military found guilty of offences intended to aid the enemy, and also provide for the closing of licensed premises to tho naval and military forces if necessary. UNWELCOME SUPPORT IN ELECTIONS. GERMANS FAVOUR QUEENSLAND LIBERALS. Brisbane, May 20. The local German newspaper "Zettung"' published an article urging German electors to vote for the Liberals including Mr. Denham (Premier). This has roused strong comment in a section of the Press, and a public denial lias been given by Mr. .Denham that his party authorised the publication of tho article. ALIEN ROUND-UP IN AUSTRALIA. BIGGER PROPORTIONS THAN IN BRITAIN Melbourne, May 20. Senator'Pearce (Federal Defenco Minister) states that the Federal authorities have interned more alien subjects than England in proportion to population. He asks of people hearing oxprcsssions of disloyalty or anything suspicious that they should report to the military or tlie police authorities, who will investigate. The employees at the Newport workshops have asked the Railway Comv eioner to- dismiss enemy subjects under the age of fifty-five from the service. POWERS OF ATTORNEY FOR ENEMIES. AN ACT OF TRADING. Sydney, May 19. Mr. Justicc Harvey in the Equity Court has decided that no one can legally hold or execute a power of attorney for an enemy subject. Mr. Holman, State Premier! states that in addition to the four millions to bo spent by the Norton Griffiths Company, the Government will expend four millions oil public works during tho coming year. The money might ba raised in London, or part locally. EMPIRE TRADE MOVEMENT., Sydney, May 20. In connection with the world-wide movement for rendering the British Empire self-contained, the Society of Chemical Industry lias decided to establish a permanent information bureau, and take other steps, in conjunction with the parent society in London, to develop the industry.
