HOW H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND FARES
LETTER FROM CAPTAIN HALSEY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, May 19. In tbe course of an interesting letter received by. Mr. C. J. Parr from Captain Halsey, R.N., the commander of H.M.S. New Zealand 6ays:—"Wo have had a long and very trying North Sea winter, but have been rewarded by being in the only naval engagements there have been in this part <f tbe world. We don't mind how I'.ng we have to wait, as long as we K<'t at tl om properly in the end. The officers and men have been on board now since July 27, and are quite splendid, being full of life and vigour. They have not had a single day's leave sjnee that date, though we occasionally manage to land for a march or a game of football in the afternoons. Good luck to you and the good people of Auckland. We all on board realise how much you all think of us and your ship. We endeavour to live up to the standard expected by all true New Zealanders. You in Auckland who gave those presents to the engine-room department of this ship will be glad to hear what magnificent work that department did when chasing the enemy's battleoruisers on January 24. They exceeded by far any previous steaming ever done by the ship, and their great care of the engines and boilers throughout the commissiou showed itself in the fact that there was not a defect of any sort or description after that great chase."
