The Northern Company's new schooner Poroto is having her propellers fitted at Auckland prior to being engaged in the Auckland-Bay of Plenty tradio. Whilst Homeward bound from Wellington last voyage, tho Shaw-Savill liner Mamari sighted the steamer" Jersey City in distress in the Bay of Biscay. Signals were exchanged, and it was ascertained that the Jersey City had lost oil-her propeller blades and needed assistance. She had been for four days previously without havung sighted a vessel of any doscription. Notwithstanding the heavy sea which was running, a line was mado fast from the Mamari, and the "lame duck" was towed to Lisbon-a distance of 300 miles—in 48 hours.

Latest advices regarding the Federal and Shire liner Somorset aro that the vossel was to have sailed from Liverpool for New Zealand ports on May 5. So far, however, tne agents have not been advised of her departure, tho presumption being that owing to certain delays she ha-3 not yet been dispatched. As discharge of the A. and A. Lino's chartered steamer Invertay will not bo completed at Wellington before Thursday, it is probable that she will not get away for Melbourne before Friday morning at earliest

On her return from Whanga-rei on Saturday, May 22, the Manaia will be withdrawn for a fortnight for docking and overhaul. The Ngapuhi will take up the Manaia's running from Monday, May 24. until Saturday. Mr. Zohrab local agent for the Chatham Islands Fishing Company, has been advised <hat the Himitangi has been sheltering at the Islands on account of bad weather. She is due at Lyttelton on Thursday next, and will subsequently visit Wellington. On arrival at Lyttelton from Greymonth the Poherua is to "blow down" her boilers for inspection prior to sailing for Launceston.
