WORK AND WAR

MAYOR'S ADVICE TO SINGLE MEN. There were half a dozen of them in a row —swarthy bronzed-faced men, not the least like the usual order of -men who wait to see the - Mayor of a morning, seeking his advice as to a job or a possible movement which might lead to one. On inquiry being made as to who they were it was found that they were ■ seamen, w'ho had been deprived of work through some steamers being withdrawn, from commission. Their cases were not very bad, however, as it was ascertained that somo of them who were unmarried had enlisted as recruits, but as they were not tj be called upon to go into camp until May 29, they were on the look-out for something wherewith to keep lho pot boiling.

Speaking on the prospects of work during tho winter months His Worship (Mr. J. P. Luke) said that just at present there was nothing doing, but the City Engineer (Mr. Morton) was now going into the Estimates, and the City Treasurer (Mr. Collins) was looking into the finances in order to see what money will be available for works during the current year outside of maintenance and other routine work. The result of their deliberations will probably be known in time for their suggestions to be considered by the Finance Committee on Tuesday next. If approved by the committee they will be passed on to the council, and when approved steps will be' at once takento - commence tho work. Fortunately Wellington has not been hadly off as far as work is concerned since the outbreak of the war, and now, as applications are received, preference v/ould be given to our own married men with families. For the healthy .young man who is without dependents there was other work to do.
