Mr. 'William Brian de Laval 'Willis, a son of Archdeacon Willis, of Cambridge, who has just died of wounds sustained at tho Dardanelles, was a young and promising officer of the Lands and Survey Department. He was educated at St. John's Collegiate School. Auckland, joined tho Department on February 1, 1906, as a draughting cadet, and becamo a member of the College Riflo Volunteers. Two years later lie was transferred to the field under District Surveyor E. S. Galbraith. and three years later joined the staff of Mr. J. Langmuir, Inspector of Surveys. After obtaining tho necessary experience he sat for and passed the examination of tho Federated Surveyors' Boards of Australia and Now Zealand in March, 1912, and was then promoted to be an assistant-surveyor as from May 1, 1012. Sinco that time ho has been carrying out surveys in the Auckland district, and in common with many other officers of the Department volunteered for sorvice with the Expeditionary Forces.
Among those killed in action in the Dardanelles is Major Hamilton, of the Australian Forces. He was a brother, of Staff Captain Hamilton, of the Finance Department of National Headquarters of the Salvation Army, Wellington.
Mr. John Farrell, the theatrical ■ advance- agent, is making a big jump across this section of the globe to announce the coming to Wellington of the Williamson Dantomimo "Cinderella." He left Perth (Western Australia) for Sydney on May 8, and will leave tho latter port for Wellington on Friday next. "Cinderella" will be seen at tha Grand Opera House on June 8 or 0.
Mr. R. W. Shallcrass, general secretary of the New Zealand Sports Protection League, is visiting the Gisborne and Hawke's Day branches of th« league.

Mr. Richard St£~2.rt. of the managerial staff of J. C. Williamson, Ltd., and well known throughout Xew Zealand, is to succeed Mr. Harold Ashton as the firm's representative in South Africa, and will leave Sydney, with the members of his family, by the Demosthenes nest month for Cape Town.
Mr. C. Harper has been appointed to act as assessor for the Petone Borough Council en the Assessment Court.
Mr. Charles A. Caigou, first-assistant at Lansdowne School, proceeds t-o Trentham with the next reinforcement contingent. He has had some years' experience with the Officers' Training Corps.
Sergeant Gerald Sievers, who- has .been wounded at tho Dardanelles, was a well-known Wairarapa footballer.
At the monthly meeting of the Thorndon Catholic Federation Committee held on Sunday evening, it was resolved to forward a letter of congratulation to Mi"; J. P. Kelly, the liewlyelected Mayor of Eastbourne, upon his successful entry into public life. It was noted with pleasure that Mr. Kelly has the distinction of being the first Government official to occupy such a position since the right of Civil Servant! to take part in municipal politics ha: been Tecognised by tho Government.
