WOOL, SKIN, AND HIDE SALES. The brokers' Teports on the wool, akin, and hide sales neld yesterday arc as under:— Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Limited, report haying sold' wool, crutchines. and skins end hades, This being til© first special sale of the season for cTutchinps, attention was naturally directed to that paTt of the sale, and the priccs paid far exceeded a., expectations, so that the results should be plea6ftnt news for vendors. Aides were slow of sale, with a drop of a id. to I<l. per lb. for heavy ox, and other lines slightly easier then at last sale.

The Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report:—The first crushing pale of the season was held yesterday in conjunction with the ordinary fortnightly offerings. In all about 1400 bales of wool were catalogued, including about 50 per cent, of crutchings. Record prices were given for crutchdngo, up to 141 - being paid —our top price was 14d. for a small lot of medium quality. Wo sold fleece wool at from lljd. to 153 d., and pieces and locks at equally good prices. There was a. good demand for skins, at prices equivalent to lat© rates, but hides suffered a decline on last sale's prices. Tallow was oleo lower. Messrs. Levin and Company, Limited, re* port offering 300 bales of wool. Buyers were present from all parts of the Dominion, and several Homo buyers were also operating. Japan, was represented. Bidding was extremely lively; and there appeared to be no limit to prices. Best crutchings sold up to 14£ d. and good 13d. to 13ijd.; medium, 12d. to 13d.; seedy and inferior, 9£d. .to 113 d. Hides were considerably easier for all classes, owing to- the difficulty in export. Tallow was somewhat easier.

Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report that wool was keenly competed for at high, values, crutchings reaching a. figure unprecedented in the trade. The highest price paid for super crutchinss was 14Jd. per lb. The firm offered two lines of scoured'WOOl, and these Bold as follow:—Scoured crossbred, 203 d. to 21d.; pieces and bellies, 19} d. to 19Jd; stained pieces and second pieces, 16d. to 161 d. locks, 123 d. to 143 d. Skins were very fir.m at late prices. Hides were again lower.

Messrs. Murray, Eoberts, and Co., Ltd., report:—The first crutchings sale was held yesterday, when we catalogued 442 bales of Wool, 2100 sheepskins, and 600 hides. Competition was extremely keen. The outstanding feature of the sale was the very high prices realised for greasy crutellings, which were forward in fair supply. Never before in the history of the "trade have such prices been realised for these wools, values betas practically on a par with fleece Wools. The top price paid was 143 d., and we obtained this figure for no fewer than eight different parcels in our catalogue, while several lots made from 13d. to l<d. per lb.j fleece wool realised up to 153 d. j wllile some super lambs brought 16d. Sheepskins sold well up to late rates, but liidee showed a decline, ox being up to a halfpenny lower, while cows dropped a farthing:. Mlow sold at last sale's figures. Successful sales were also held by Messrs. W. and G. Turnbull and Co., the Wairarapa Parmers' Co-op. Association, and the United Farmers' Co-op. Association.

Messrs. W. and G. Turn bull and Co. report e successful sale. The top price ol the sale was secured, by them for crutehings on account of Mrs. E. A. Buseoll and Mr. Erl Williams.

SOUTHERN MARKETS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

Christchurch, May 14. There does not appear to be any further sign of a. move in either the -wheat or oats market. There is little wheat offering from groware, but it is reported tliat wheat in second hands has been offered at 6s. 9d. f.o.b. In the oats market there is practically nothing doing. Oafeheaf chaff is very firm, aild up to £6 ss. has been paid at country stations for very prime samples. The demand for straw chaff has eased off, and wheat straw chaff is now only worth 355. to 40s. at country stations. There is no change in the potato market, £3 10s. being the normal price at country station s. Some cow grass seed' is now coming on the market, and it is selling at 6d. to 7d, A quantity of Eeed was held over from laßt year, and as it is one of the few seeds that' have not gone up on account of th© war, the price is lower in proportion than any other agricultural 6eeds. The quantity offering appears to be smaller than last year. White clover seed is easier, and is now worth Is. to Is. 2d.

LONDOK MARKETS. Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., have received the following cablegrams from their London office, dated May 13:—Wool sales: Sales proceed with increasing spirit. Compared with closing rates of March eolcs, fine and medium crossbreds are on a par, and coarse 5 per. cent.. lower. Good merinos, greasy and scoured, are on a par, but faulty and inferior are 5 per cent, lower, whilst short, burry, scoured are neglected. Tallow: At the auctions, prices declined on the average Is. per cwt. Good mixed realised 345. 6d. per cwt.

HONEY MARKET. ■ The Bank of England discount rate was on January 2, 1914, reduced from 5 to 4} per cant., on January 22, it was reduced to 4 per cent.-, and on January 28 3 per cent. On July 30 tho rate was raised to 4 per cent., and on January 28 J per cent., and on. August 1 it was further advanced to 10 per cent.
