FARMING & COMMERCIAL

EXPORT OF FROZEN MEAT

JUNE AND JULY ALLOTMENTS. (By Telegraph—PresH, Association.) Christchurch, May 13. Tho Now.Zealand Overseas Shipowners' Committee havo written to the general 'manager of the Christchurch Meat- Company, Ltd., advising that the committee havo allotted space for 138,000 freight carcasses for J uuo and July loading, subject to tho arrival of tho Rangitira, Paparoa, Kia Ora, Athenic,' Remuera, Opawa, Tongariro, and La Blanca. The committee hoped in a few weeks' time to be in a position to allot space in July and August steamers."

51r. W; Murray, general manager of the Christchurch Meat Company, replied. to tho abovo'to-day as follows:— "We have to acknowledge receipt of your favour of tho 12th inst., in which you allot us space for 138,000 freight carcasses for June-July loading, subject to the arrival of eight steamers which you name. Judging from tho information supplied to us as to tho movements of those vessels, your allotment has to servo our five factories for tho whole of June, and probably for the most of July; it is doubtful, therefore, whether, it can in any way bo regarded as an improvement on an entirely inadequate provision which you made for this present month of May, and which, as you arc aware, has resulted in the entire dislocation of the , export business ,'in Canterbury and As freight allottod to', us, if mado on an equitable basis, means that the whole of the South Island can only, havo received spaco for about 275,000 freight carcasses. Wo feel, in view of the fact that eight, steamers are available, ' according to your letter, that this is ail entirely in. adequate provision.. It further seems to show, the absolute disregard oil the part of your committee of the gravity of the position in Canterbury and Otago, in spite of many representations which havo been placed before you. It is, therefore, our duty to once more record our most emphatic protest against your allocation, which will further accentuate tile disastrous position at present existing."
