— 1 .'from Oui' Special Correspondent.! Last evening a well-filled house greeted "The Violets" at the Lower Hutt. The various items were very thoroughly enjoyed, and especially the medley of plantation songs by the full company, ■which were warmly applauded. The burlesque finale, "The Country Ball," appeared to appeal strongly to the audience. "The Violets" will appear at Lower Hutt again this evening. The Petono Municipal Band has decided to enter for the Carnival competition on Juno 3. A meeting of Hutt citizens was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) presiding, to discuss matters in connection with tho forthcoming Carnival. The Mayor of Petone vSr. J. W. M'Ewan) was also present. As 110 candidate to represent the Hutt had been nominated, it was unanimously decided to support the Petone candidate, who i 3 to be chosen by ballot on Friday evening. A committee consisting of Messrs. Baldwin, Chapman, i'-ondon, Robertson, Burns, M'Bain, and Hodgins was appointed to further the candidature of tho Hutt and Petono ruprescntative. Two juveniles were taken into custody last evening by the Petone police, charged with the theft of poultry. There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of tho Petone and Hutt Pluukot Socicty, held in the Municipal Buildings, Petone, yesterday afternoon. Mrs. M'Caw and Mrs. Dormer, of tho Lower Hutt, wore e'ccted to the committee. Tho I'lunket nurso reported that during the past five weeks 66 visits had been paid by mothers to the Plunkct room, end 32 visits by tho nurse to babies in thoir homes. There are at prosent 80 cases under care. It was decided to hold a jumble salo on Wedncsday ( May 26, iu tho lads' room, St. Augustine's Church, Brill Street, towards which articles, new and second-hand, of any description, will bo very gratefully received by the committee, and may be left at St. Augustine's Vicarage, or at the homo of the secretary, 19 Brill Street, wiio will also call for goods if desired. A "social'' under the auspices of the I'elone Woollen Mills oinplovees was held at St. Augustine's Hall, Petone, last evening. The object of the function was to further the candidature of Miss Marion Senior, who is representing tho woollen mill in the Carnival Queen competition. The building: was crowded, and a most enjoyable time was spent. On Tucsdav evening at Lower Hutt upwards of 30 new members were enrolled in connection wit.h the local ladies' branch of the St. John Ambulance Association Overseas. 11, was decidcd to I donate £5 to the Base Hospital in France, and £o to the Treat-ham Hog* ' ' -i
