RATEPAYERS NOT LEANINGPOSTS
.— 4 THE MAYOR AND THE UNEMPLOYED. In the course of liis remarks at the installation ceremony in connection with the Mayoralty yesterday, Mr. J. P. Luke made it quite clear that he did not intend to encourage any false sentiment in connection with those applying for work. He said th.at lie found that there were people coming to him wlio should not be unemployed—people who were, gravitating to the city from the country on the chance of getting work. He made it quite clear that the city was not going to create work for such. Our own people must be first secured, and married men must have a claim over single men. He hod pointed out two alternatives to single men applying for work, the patriotic one that they should serve their country, or they should go into the country and take tho place of those brave fellows who had enlisted. Ho was not going to have thom hanging round tho Town Hall. Personally, he could see no difficulty ahead on the score of unemployment. They had sent away about 20.000 men—their best men—and it was going to take more than. 20,000 of tho sort that are left behind to do their work. In any case, it would be useless for them to rely on the council for work.
