j • ' JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. (From Our Special Correspondent*.) NAPIER. To-day Mr. A. E. Jull was unanimously re-elected chairman of tho Napier Harbour Board, and voted" an honorarium of £100. The following appeared before the Nar pier Court to-day, and were convicted on charges of having sent receipts to tho Comity Council without fixing stamps thereto:—William M'Culloch (accountant, Napier), Henry John Jull (contractor, Napier), Christopher Hampton (storekeeper, Havelock North), Alex. Malcolm Brodie (veterinary surgeon, Hastings), William Grant (Hastings). Mr. C. M'Connell, conductor of the Napier City Band, has_ been appointed conductor of the Napier Choral Society. ; _ Complaints have been received that recruiting is not so active in Hastings as it should be, and Dr. M'Nab, M.P., has arranged to address a mcoting there on Monday next. PAHIATUA. The Pahiatua County Council has givon notice to strike a general " rate j for the current year of ljd. in the £. This is id. in the £ increase on last year's rate, and the revenue to be derived as a result of the proposed increase is approximately £1000. Goats', hta has been declared a noxious weed in the' Pahiatua country. At the Woodville County Council meeting a'request from five employees of the oouncil for an . increase in salary of about £1 per month was favourably considered, only two members opposing the- request. The death occurred at Mangatainoka on Saturday evening of Roy D. Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Taylor. The little boy, who was only five years and eleven months old, was _at school on Friday. Ha took ill with pneumonia on the same evening, and died the following night. The handsome mounted stag's head, donated by Mr. Hugh M'Kay, and auctioned in aid of the Belgian Fund at tho Pahiatua Farmers' Union social last week-end, realised £530. This sum is likely to be brought up to £700, as the purchaser, Mr. S. V. Rodney, has decided to present the head to the Pahiatua School, provided that the public subscribe at least £700 'to the Belgian Fund. A number of donations have been received for the object named.
