THE "QUEEN" CARNIVAL

NOMINATION OF CANDIDATES,

Tlie great interest now being taken by the public in the work of our troops at the front should awaken widespread support for the carnival to be held on the King's Birthday (June 3). Its object is to raise funds to help wounded and disabled 6oldiers and sailors, and to provide assistance for the dependants of those ivlio aro killed.

The principal feature of the carnival will bo the election of a queen, to bo chosen from the ladies who are nominated by various local clubs and societies! The queen will be elected by public vote, the votes being sold for twopence each. _ In this way it is possi to raise an immense sum of money, the carnival recently held in Christchurch bringing in £30,000. The important preliminary is the nomination of lady candidates to contest the election of the carnival queen of Wellington. About a 6core of local bodies, etc., have been invited to nominate a representative, and it is hoped that a good list of candidates will bo forthcoming. The success of the carnival depends upon public interest ahd support, and that depends largely upon tho number of candidates contesting the queen election. Jf every section of the public has its own representative, and .works hard on her behalf, then the fund will mount up steadily day by day, and on tho evening of Juno 3 a large 6um of money will be available for a very worthy purpose. Those who are interested in the selpction of queen candidates are reminded that nominations close with tho secretary of the Patriotic Society, Mr. Jos. Lewis, 18 Grey Street, at -6 p.m. o. next Tuesday, May 11.
