$ HUNTLEY AND TAUPffil MAGISTRATE'S RULING ON OLD WORKINGS (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Hamilton, May 7. Mr. Rawson, S.M., gave judgment today in tho case in which tnc managers of the Huntly and Taupiri mines were prosecuted for failing to cause reasonable precautions to be taken for the safety of tho men working in the mines, also for failing to appoint sufficient underviowers to cause tho niinos to bo inspected daily. The Magistrate held that the word "mine' 1 could not be restricted to the operative parts of the mine only, but applied to the old workings. Defendants were convicted and fined £5 Is. and costs on the first charge, and convicted without a fine on the second.

This ruling will affect every' coal mine inthe Dominion where old workings exist. To the Taupiri Company it will mean an additional expense of £5000 yearly.
