Mr. Fisher (Federal Prime Minister) attended and discussed matters of interest to tie Commonwealth, including a strategic railway, covering a distance of 2618 miles from Perth, to Brisbane. The Conference agreed that such a railway was a necessity, and decided that the expert opinion of the Railway Commissioners of the States interested be obtained regardinc various points involved, including the New South Wales scheme for utilising to a greater extent tho existing lines than the Common' wealth proposal provides, thereby saving four millions of tlie twelve millions estimated cost. It is ■understood the Commopwealth will construct, work, and pay for the line.
