OKAKUNE TIMBER RIGHTS
PROTEST FROM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
(By Telegraph —Press Association/ Ohakuno, May 6. At a special mooting of tho Oliakune Borough Council, held last night, tlio following resolution was passed: "That this council of the Borough of Ohakuuo strongly protests against tho action of tho Railway Department in handing over to tlio liangntaiia Timber Company Sections 1 and Block V, Karioi S.D., and adjoining sections which were reserved at groat oxpenso for a State saw-mill. The Railway Department's action is most unjust to this town, as the starting of tlio mill was looked forward to, aiid would havo tended to promote settlement hero. For tho starting of this mill a siding was put in and a considerable amount of preliminary work done. Tho council also protests against tho handing of eucli valuable bush areas over to any private individual or company without open competition, more especially to n company already holding large timber rights, as in the present instance. Tho council trusts that the original intention to put in a State mill will bo carried out, and that rho published negotiations with the'Rangataua Company will be at once terminated." A copy of the resolution has boon forwarded to tho Prime Minister.
