Towards that figure the North Island services contributed £2,244,334 10s. 10d., an increase of £15,022 Ss. od. and the South Island a total of £1,861,122 9s. 10d., an. increase of £47,107 3s. lOd. The total expenditure for the year was £2,920,454 17s. 7d., an increase of £40,131 17s. Dd. lowards the expenditure the North Island services contributed £1,587,177 14s. 6d., or 70.72 of. the revenue, and the South Island, £1,333,277 3s. Id., _or 71.64 of the revenuo. It is interesting to note that the revenue per mile of railway over the North Island main line, and branches was Tinn? S ' expenditure £1397 10s. Bd. The best return in that regard is yielded by the Westport line, where the revenue per mile has been £3253 ss. 10d., and tlie expenditure £1645 12s. lod., a profit on the running of £1607 13s. per mile of railway. The length of the Westport line is 36 miles. This uncommonly heavy profit does not, however, go to swell the coffers of the Railway Department, as most of it is ear-marked for the Westport Harbour Board. _ In view of the general interest taken in the workings of our railway it will bi interesting to show how the revenue and expenditure of the various lines are made up. These are shown in round figures, as follows (with length of line in parentheses):—
