i DESPERATE FIGHTING ALONG THE LINE FIRST APPEARANCE OF GERMANS IN THE ST.RYJ REGION ■ The High Commissioner reports :— . London, May 5, 3.20 p.m. "In Galicia, from the Vistula to the Carpathians, there was a succession of battles on Sunday and Monday. The enemy crossed to the right (east) of Donajecz, but their further advance was checked. A particularly desperate fight took place in the region of Tukoff Biecz. In the course of counter-attacks the Russians took hundreds of prisoners. "The Germans are making their first appearance in the- Carpathians, in the Stryj region. At Golovetsko there have been very fierce battles. Olio hill changed hands three times, but the Russians finally captured it on Monday. During the day they tool: 1200 prisoners and three machinc-guns, "At the source of the River Svitzo (a few miles north-east of Vereczke Pass) an attempt of the enemy to envelope the Russian flank failed, prisoners being taken and the enemy falling back in disorder. "At certain points the enemy attempted to cross the Nida, but counterattacks compelled them to evacuate the left bank of the river altogether. "Near Krasneff the enemy concentrated hurriedly, and stubbornly threw up entrenchments on Sunday liiglit. The Russians attacked the occupants with the bayonet and annihilated them. The Russians took <100 prisoners, including nine officers." London, May 6, 4.25 a.m. "Between the Vistula and the Carpathians, the .Germans have brought into their fighting line fresh forces in groat strength, supported by numerous. artillery. The enemy's massed formation is suffering enormous Josses. "Some Russian units fell back to their second line of fortifications after obstinate fighting. • "At Angelow, on the Upper Lomnitza, on Monday, the enomy's offensive on an extensive front produced no result."

There was great depression in Berlin when the actual value ,of the victory became known. RUSSIAN RIGHT WING ATTACKED ' ADVANCED LINE THREATENED IN REAR. (Reo. May 7, 2 a.m.) London, May 6. The "Morning Post's" Petrograd correspondent says that the.Austro-Ger-mans' are now attacking the Russian right and threatening the rear of the advanced Russian iine across the Carpathians. The Grand Duke's lines are intact.
