ADVANCE NEW ZEALAND

Sir, —For a long time it was thought quite sufficient that foreigners should learn our language and so enable them to have commercial dealings; etc., witli the Empire, but when we notice that Chinese, Germans, French, Japanese, and nations learn other languages besides their own, is it not time that tho Education Department make it compulsory that scholars should learn French or German? Why should young New Zealanders be placed in such a disadvantage to others? Now that we constantly travel to other countries is sufficient evidence that our young people should be able to hold their own against those who have learnt other languages. In London they are training hoys to act as waiters and to learn French, which is of the utmost value now that we have many gallant Allies as Belgium and France. Already numbers of youths-and girls are learning French in this city at their own expense. Why not give the same privileges to those who cannot afford it? Trusting that others will come forward and help to carry out the _ above subject for the sake of the rising generation, and not let them be so ignorant as only to know their own language.—l. am, etc., S. STIDOLPH. Wellington, April 30, 1915.
