WELLINGTON SOUTH CLUB. The tenth annual meeting of the Wellington South Chess Club was held 011 J'nday evening at the club's rooms n n I ;?, wtolvn Public Library. Mr. 11. is. Allen occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance, about twothirds of the members being present. annual report and balance-sheet presented by the hon. secretary, Mr. W. 13. I. ierrott, shows that the club has had a successlul year. There was a flii.all credit balance on tho year's transactions, and m this connection thanks are accorded to Drs. Kemp and Bowerbank, and also to Messrs. B. B. Allen, Berry, Harper. Thompson, Perrott, and Rolling for donations. Sixteen competitors entered for the annual handicap tourney, which was played in two' sections. The six who qualified for the fanals were: Purchas (Class I), Louey (Cass III), Berry (IV) Weine (IV), Allen (I;, and Perrott (IV). The play m tho finals resulted as follows-.—Per-rott (4i wins) won first prize (a handsome 'in statu quo" travelling set, in leather case, presented by Mr. B. B Allen), G. H. Loney (4 wins), second P™ o . D- Purchas (2 wins), and A. Weine (2 wins), divided the third prim, The raarkod revival of interest' in ladder matches was a gratifying feature. The report and balance-,sheet were adopted on the motion of the chairman who made reference to tie satisfactory position of the club and to the excellent prospects of the incoming year. The election of officers resulted a 6 follows President, W. Armstrong; vice-presi-dents, Dr. H. Kemp, Dr. Bowerbank Rev. Jenkins, B. B. Allen, and F. K, Rolling; lion, secretary and treasurer' Air. W. B. P. Perrott (re-elected, amidst applause); committee: Messrs. Douglas . Weine, Berry, Wclton, and Purchas : auditor, Mr. G. H. Loney; delegate to New Zealand Chess Association, Mr. W. J. Harpor. It was decided to change the night of meeting from Friday to Tuesday, at the end of this month, i.e., when the weekly half-holiday changes from Wednesday to Saturday. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to all who have assisted the club with donations, and a: similar tribute to last year's office-hearers.
WELLINGTON CHESS CLUB,
Play in this club's annual handicap tourney came to an end last week, when the outstanding game Barnes v. Still was won by the former. Mr. White, of Class V, thus secures tie first prize, and holds the Petherick trophy for the ensuing 12 months. His tally was 6 wing 1 loss. Hie success is very popular, as he is a keen student or the game. The second and third prizes were divided by Messrs. Still (Class I) and W. C. Hiil (Class III), who each scored 5 wins 2 losses.
The club is holding its annual meeting on May 12, and will bo playing the annual telegraphic match with the Canterbury • Chess Club on the 15th and 22nd if a wire can bo arranged , for.
