NOTES ON THE RACING.
(By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Napier, May 1. King's Guard, winner at Napier in March, was the. elect of the public in the Hack Hurdles, with Fagot and Braeburn backed in that order. Okahu whipped round when tho tapes were skied and took no part in the race. At the start Fagot and King's Guard led from Ruffiano, with Braebuni tailed off. Over tho long flat stretch at the railway bend Braeburn improved his position, and, jumping the last fence well he caught the favourite 100 yards off tne post, and in. a ding-dong finish tho pair passed the post locked together, the judge declaring a dead-heat. Golden Water was ten lengths away in. third place. Braeburn has an unsightly-looking knee, < but if he keeps sound no is sure to win races this winter. Euffiano fell early in the race. Cervulus, who had showed winning form on the opening day, was the favourite in the Okawa Hack Handicap, with Tho Pole next in demand. Perhaps made the running from Discussion and Whakahoki to tho straight entrance, but horo the favourite came through, and in the run home won nicely. Whakahoki was second after running very wido at thb turn and Perhaps was close up third. Tho Pole showed up for about, half a mile, but was well back at the finish. The winner is a distinctly useful member of R. Gooseraan's Hastings team. Ho is a , full-brother to Alces, but shows more prominence than the latter. Three was a very hot favourite in the Juvenile Handicap. He duly materialised, and did it comfortably. His ability to begin quickly stood him in good stead, and he was soon on the mils, with Gold Foil and Gold Shot alongside him and
straight the Donnelly-owned pair wore done vrith, and Asterias, Spain, and Recorder showed up. The> favourite easily held his own, and won nicely from Spain, who beat Recorder by a neck. Asterias was fourth.
Scratching reduced the field in the Hawke's Bay Stakes to eight runners. Desert Gold, dospito her 181b. penalty, was a good favourite, with Croesus next in demand. From a splendid start Desort Gold soon took charge from Bonny Dream, Croesus, and Hylatni. Rounding the bend the favourite was going comfortably, while Croesus had ruu into second place and Dribble third. In the straight O'Shea was able to ease the favourite, and she won very comfortably from Dribble, who just beat Croesus on the post. Eligible was fourth. The winner has now won more than any other two-year-old, and goes into winter quarters as the best filly seen out for many years. Her Derby and Oaks prospects are very good. The combination—Croesus and Deeley—suffered defeat for the first time in this race. Rangitero was disappointing, but Eligible ran a good solid race, while the form of Dribble was the best yet shown by the All Black filly. The winner and runner-up wero both sired by the imported All Black. For the Burke Memorial Handicap Ventura was a slightly bettor favourite than the Stead bracket (Sauci and Bonny Rigg). At the start Ventura failed to jump away cleanly and Bonnv Rigg led ouit of the straight with Beldame, followed by Mummer. Down the back Allen Doolie went up into second place and Sauci also improved his position. As they raced round the bend the victory of Sauci was being proclaimed, but in tlie straight Allen Doone ran very wide and took him nearly to the outside fence. However, he was straightened up and after a good finish won by a. head. Multiply, who came fast, was a length away, .followed by Mummer, who had been prominent the whole way. Ventura was disappointing, and though she was handy down the back she did not get to the front at any stage of the race. Hyettus got away badly, as did Indigo, but the latter raced well afterwards and was close up at the finish. C. Sinclair, rider of Hyettus, was jammed on the rails, and had his ankle broken. W. Young, who rode the winner, had also been successful on Three each day, his record being three tides and as many wins. After the race the Judicial Committee inquired into the bumping in tie straight, but after hearing the evidence of the riders they decided that it was quite accidental. A big field of twenty-one runners faced the starter in the Scurry Hack Handicap. The public made Marimba a good ' favourite with the Gisborne horse, King of Athol, next ohoice, while Maltegarde was neglected, though she had drawn a good marble. Papauira, on the fence, was quickest to begin and led till well down tho, straight, when .Royal Mary passed him. The latter gave way Ito Maltegarde fifty yards off tho post, and the Trentham owned filly won by a neck. Marimba' was close up third, and Multiplication fourth. Pearlform lost her rider, A. Reed, soon after the start. Reed was taken Ito the Hospital suffering from internal injuries. The winner's showing was good ,and she is now a very cheap animal. Her dividend to-day was a surprise considering her good form on the opening day. The quartet which faced the starter in the Mangataralta Hurdles were all evenly backed. The Judicial Committee inspected the fences before the start of the race. Flingot again dwelt at the post, but not as badly as on the first day. At, the start Vi and Bollin led Sensitive. Tho first-named fell at the fence opposite the 6tand, and Bollin took chaTge going into the straight. At the last fence Sensitive, who was running down all his' fences, nearly took Flingot off, but the latter scrambled over while Sensitive fell. Flingot beat Bollin in. the run to ,the post. The showing of Sensitive may leaathe Judicial Committee to review F. Cress's sentence of two years, over the running on the first day. Downham, wno has been overdue for a long time, scored a surprise win in the Farewell Handicap, after a grealt struggle with Tete-a-Tete and Veronoal. The last-named was favourite, and witH Tete-a-Tete led into the straight from .Downham. The last-named got up on the fence and scored a lucky win by 'the narrowest of margins. Dinner Gong got, away badly.
badly.
