ATHLETIC SPORTS.

FOR THE WOUNDED RAISING RELIEF BIG CROWD AT RUGBY EFFORT TRENTHAM'S FINE TEAM "Thousands of gallant New Zealanders have taken up arms on behalf of their King and Empire. They are doing 'their full duty to thoir country and to us. It remains for lis, therefore, to do our full duty to them and their dependents. Now is the time to make the necessary provision, and I am confident that the citizens of the . Dominion will consider it a privilege to see that every possible help and assistance may be provided to alio- • viate distress coming as the result of the response to .tho Empire's call." The message is the Prime Minister's, and the. ocoasion for which it was sent was Saturday's Rugby match in aid of Neiv Zealand wounded soldierß and their dependents. The match was played on Athletic l'ark, and was well supported by the public, the attendance numbering about 3000 people. The teams Which' provided, the attraction were a Wellington representative team and a team drawn from Trentham camp. The Trentham fifteen included several New Zealand representatives) and most of the remainder were provincial representatives. The team : was> of at least Island strength (on paper). It was the apparent strength ot the oamp team wnich 'drew the crowd. Among those present were tho Prime Minister (the Right Hon. W. F. Massey) and the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke). The Treutham team was composed of the following players Full-back ,; H. Adams (Wellington representative): three-quarters, D'. Wilson (Auckland and New Zealand University representative), G. Murray (Wellington and Auckland representative) J. K. Ellis (of South Auckland); five-eighths, S. Cameron (Taranaki representative) and E. Roberts (.New Zealand, North Island, and Wellington representative);. halfback, A. Koss (Auckland representative); .wing-forward, A. Taylor (New Zealand and Taranaki representative) j pack, G. Brown (New Zealand and Taranaki representative), W. Anderson (of South Canterbury), W. H. Harvey (of Taranaki), J.' French (Auckland and Maori representative); S. Paul (of Taranaki), H. M'Nab (of Auckland). 'l'ho Wellington team was : Full-back,' H. Prendeville (Poneke): three-quarters, W. MacEwan 1 (Petonek S. Bolton (Petone), E. .Morris (Poneke); fiveeighths, B. Algar (Poneke), J. Eyan (Petone); half-back, C. Pile (Oriental); wing-forward, A. Gilchrist (Melrose); pack, W. Franois (Wellington), J. King (Poneke), A. Wilson (Athletic), R. Baton (Athletic), G. Miller (Wellington), H. Tancred (Petone), J. Mofi'att (Oriental). . The match produced very little play of high merit. On the points scored, Trentham won easily—by•_ 17 to nil—but Wellington were unlucky in not registering a fairly large score, and ill reality the contest was rather close. The Trentham men scored only three points in the first spell,-and this after several narrow escapes of having their line crossed. The first of these escapes was when Algar was thrown out at the oorner flag,'and another was when E. Rob--erts just beat Algar in a race for the oval, and saved by forcing. Trentham's three .points were'obtained from a goal by Roberts. Early in the second spell the heavy vanguard of the camp team asserted itself, and Downing, Taylor, and French lea irresistible attaoks on the foe. French (alias ".The General") was the first to score. 'A little later S. Cameron dashed across, and Murray converted this try. Trentham, 11; Wellington, nil. The gentlemen in khaki renewed the pressure vigorously, and above the din of applause a voice from the stand could be aeard: "Come on you beauties. It's a —- shame what you'll do to the Turks." 'Wellington revived a while, and Gilchrist took play to Trentham line. His pass _to .Wilson went astray, and the ball drifted out among the backs. Prendeville snapped it up and shot at the goal; but missed. Led by Moffitt, Wilson, and Francis, Wellington went right through the camp'l team, but again they failed to score. Soon afterwards Francis got dyer, but lost the hall. Before the end of the game Trentham ran up six, more points—a clever try by Ross and a try by Paul. Trentham, 17; Wellington, nil. Mr. L. Simpson was referee. CHRISTCHURCH MATCHES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) • Chrlstchurch, May 1. In the seicond round of the Rugby tournament 1 the results wereChristchurch 14 v.
