PORTLAND CEMENT
ADVANCE IN PRICES. (Br Telegraph.-Pre l -' Associax.inh.i Auckland, April 30. '. Owing to the increase iu manufacturing expenses consequent upon the war, the price of Portland cement has been raised by all companies manufacturing in New Zealand, the advance being equivalent to an average of 4s. 6d. per ton throughout the Dominion. Representatives of the various com-, panics state that prices in Australia have been _ higher during some years past than in New Zealand,- and are at present considerably higher than the ruling rates in the Dominion. On the other hand the duty on cement imported from the United Kingdom into New Zealand is 12s. per ton, while the Australian tariff is 20s. per ton. Imported- cement is now quoted at 90s. per ton c.i.f., and without duty at main ports. - The present advance will male© the price or New Zealand cement at main ports about 735. per ton to builders and contractors, merchants receiving a discount off these rates.
