A CURIOUS POSITION
ANOTHER MEETING OF THE OLD CITY COUNCIL. It is a unique experience in Wellington for a meeting of the old, or perhaps it should be called the existing, City Council, after a new one' has been elected, but this will have to be held this year. Owing to the length of time the'scrutiny of rolls and recount of ballot papers will take, it will be impossible to swear the Mayor and Council in on Wednesday next (as provided by Act). The Town Clerk (Mr. Jno. R. Palmer) has found it expedient to call the old council together on Thursday next at 7.30 p.m." to confirm a special order in connection with the transference of tho lease of the Club Hotel property on Lambton Qua}'. * The business is purely formal and will only take a few minutes: As to the status of the old cotuicil to confirm any ordinance, Mr. Palmer states that both' the Mayor and members of the Council are legally in office until their successors are sworn in. That ceremony may be another ten or twelve days off yet.
