SCHOOL COMMITTEES
NEWTOWN SCHOOL. The annual report of the Newtown School Committee states that, shaking generally, the school buildings are in a. good state of repair, although the door-sills are giving evidence of the 1 ceaseless tramp of many feet whioh have passed over them. The letting of_ tho tennis courts has resulted in an addition of £18 to the school funds, 'and has enabled us to purchase ail instrument called a dulcitone for the primary department. This instrument cost £14, and is used in the place of a piano for instruction in singing. Being light, it can be carried from one class room to another. One thing which the commit--too is pleased to notice in. connection with scholars of this school is growth of a patriotic and self-reliant spirit, which is evidenced by the manner in which the children themselves have organised bazaars, etc., to raise .money for patriotic purposes. The various efforts in connection with the sohcoL have resulted in the raising of about £i 0 for the several funds in connection with the war. The boys are to be congratulated on the enthusiasm shown in connection with the planting and hoeing of about an acre of fmtatoes- on the Town Belt section, which, when sold, realised about £18. The money , for ploughing, harrowing, and supplying seed for planting was raised principally by the scholars, supplemented' by several outside contributions.
