GERMAN INSULTS TO MOHAMMEDANS

LOYAL LETTER FKOMTHE SULTAN OF ZANZIBAR. The Secretary of State for the Colonies !ha6 received from the High Commissioner for Zanzibar the text of a letter addressed by his Highness the Sultan of Zanzibar to the Liwali of .Mombasa and Mohammedans residing in the East Africa Protectorate. 1 In the course of the letter, in which ho bids ,all true Mohammedans to remain steadfastly loyal to tlie British Government, he says :..■■■ "Let"me,warn you against believing lies coming from Germans. Remember how' the Germans behavod during the reigns of Seyyid Majid and Seyyid Bar-gash-respectively.' The amount of outranges and violation of ■the local Government's rights and forced intervention in. our religious concern committed by tliem at that time, even. entering the Mosquee with their shoes; on, ■ not even'regarding the sacred rights of the Mosques. In addition to which they demonstrated with their mighty hands, and all the wrongs and militarism shown by them at that time are still fresh in your memory. The seizing .of the dominions on mainland, which act, coming from them as it did was no less despotism and open, enmity, without deserving any.right 1 thereto. The hanging of many .Arabs and confiscating their properties, and the tyrannical acts committed at that time have no limit. .The German Government is harsh and cruel, and they , have ever shown themselves scornful and despising of Mohammedans. Do not .believe their words, for they lie to gain your and then they will crush and illrtreat you and our religionists. . . . Ilearn from Stamboul itself that the Turkish people do not want to fight the English, their friends, but the Germans havg forced the Turks to fight. The Germans have taken charge .of Constantinople, and will verily bring to destruction the Turkish Empire and our holy places to sui* their own ends.
