SOMETHING ABOUT THEM. . Respecting the new members of the City Council, Mr. ,T. Hutcheson is not an old member once more returned, a 6 some people have surmised. They have probably confused Sir. Hutoheson's services in Parliament as a member for Wellington (in I.S9G-99 and 1900-2), and as a member of tho H&vbour Board, on which'liu sat as Government nominee from 1806 to 1 !)0(J. Mr. Hutcheson is a native of Dumbarton in Scotland, and after receiving a sound education went io saa. aud roved tho woi'ld ia the dax&J

of sailing vessels. Finally in 1881 lie settled down in Wellington, and was employed as a ship's rigger by Messrs. E. \V. Mills and Co. During later years lie has been in business on his own account, and has been out of public life. Ho is a bright and vital speaker and a forceful personality. Mr. W. H. Bennett is the well-known builder and contractor, and a. member of one of Wellington's oldest families. Mr. Alexander Veitch was formerly senior partner of the firm of Veitch and Allan, from which he retired about four years ago. He is now interested in several companies, and is an enthusiastic member (and direotdr) of tho Wellington Bowling Club.

Mr. W. T. Hildreth was Mayor of Karori last year, and up till recently was the nominee of the late Government on the Harbour Board. Mr. Hildreth has business connections in Wellington and Auckland, and is a man who has always taken a live interest in local politics. Mr. Thomas Bush is new to public life in Wellington. Up till a year or si> ago ho was managing director of the Union Clothing Company, but last year resided some six months in Australia. Mr. Bush (who formerly resided in Wanganui) is well known in business circles and i? an ardent' bowler. f ' SUBURBAN REPRESENTATIVES. Council election the whole of the six candidates on the Labour ticket appear oil the' list of unsuccessful candidates. Miss E. Melville was re-elected, second on the poll. Dr. Florence Keller head-ed-the poll for the Hospital Board election. iiirkenhead.—Mr. J. P. M'Phail was returned, as Mayor. . Cambridge.—For the Mayoralty, Mr. Wells-was re-elected by a majority-of 160. Councillors elected were: —Messrs. Care, Bell, Middleton, Browning, Moorehouse, Bycroft, Priestley, Anderson; and Hunter, Auckland Harbour Board representative for Central Waikato; Jlr. Francis Queen, farmer, Te Awamutu, who defeateed Mr. Dickinson by 62 votes and Mr. Allen by. 311. Dargaville.—Mr. M'Lean was .returned as Mayor unopposed. ' For the council;. Messrs. H. Norgrove,, J. H. Spragg, R. A. Jackson, D. L. Ross, and J. Frost were elected, Messrs. W. Allen, and H. G. Anderson'will have the votes recounted to-day for sixth place. , Dannevirke.—Four new councillors have been elected to the council, which now consists of Messrs. Menefy, Drummond, Armstrong, Anderson. Ashcroft, Carston, Dobson, Fraser, and Stewart. Eltliam.—Result of .the Mayoralty election: Mr.' B. Dive, 267; Mr. G. H. Buckeridge, 241. '

Tho Saturday half-holiday was voted on for the first time at Whangarei yesterday, and the proposal was defeated by 514 votes against 251. ■

GREY TOWN RESULTS. (From Our Bpecial Correspondent) Creytown, April 29. The municipal election here yesterday did not creato much stir. The following were declared elected to the council: —Messrs. W. % Winder, H. TJdy, H. Haigh, E. G. Beard, H. Trotman. S. Poison, A. L. Webster, J. S. KentJohnstou, and T. E. Kempton. Mr. D. P. Loasby was elected Mayor unopposed. For the Harbour Board the votes were'as follow:—Mr. 'Cross, 110; Mr. Daniels, 156; Mr. M'Farlane, 115; informal, 11.
