THE ELECTIONS
LATEST FIGURES TO HAND ? CITY COUNCIL RESULT ' MR. T. BUSH IN FIFTEENTH PLACE Though the very latest figures were supplied to the public yesterday morning respectings the elections there was one booth delaying the officials at the Town Hall. As there were known to have been 856 votes to count there it was not at all certain as to who tlio fifteenth member of the City Council might be, as thero were only 200 votes between tlio fifteenth member 011 the list (Mr. Thos. Bush) and the sixteenth (Mr. J. S. Swan). ■ The final figures (so far) givo Mr. Bush a substantial lead and a seat on the council.
There were 110 changes in the figures respecting the Mayoralty, which wei'o as follow:— . J. P. Luke 9898 Robert Fletcher 7483 C. H. Chapman ' 1132 According to the calculations of the Chief Returning Officer. (Mr. J. Ames), the £10 deposit made by Mr. Chapman is forfeited, inasmuch as the number of the votes he polled did not represent an eighth of those polled by the, successful candidate. Mr. Chapman had to poll 1237 votes to save his £10, but the votes be polled were 105 short of that nurnbor.

SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY. , The latest figures , regarding . t"he weekly-, half-holiday (complete return) shows a clear majority of 622 in favour of. Saturday as the day on which it is to be observed. The figures are Saturday 9835 Wednesday 9213 It is understood that the Observance of the weekly half-holiday on the Saturday will begin as soon as the . Chief Returning Officer (Mr.' J. Ame6) formally' reports the result of the ballot to the. City Council. This cannot be done until after the recounts are all completed, so it will probably be the week after next, before the new dispensation becomes operative.
THE SWEARINC-IN. DATE OF CEREMONY DOUBTFUL. According to the Act the Mayor and councillors should bo sworn into offico on, the first Wednesday succeeding the day of election, and that Mil be done if it is found possible. Mr. J. Ames (the Chief) Returning Officer) and his staff have an enormous task before them in checking the. rolls used in the yarious_ polling booths one against the other, in order to be in a position to disallow ballot papers in cases of dual voting; It. is not until this exhaustive scrutiny of tho rolls is finished—and it has to be gone through in each of the five issues—that the official recount can be started. With this day and night task before him, Mr. Ames considers it doubtful if he can get through by Wednesday next. If he finds that he cannot the swearing-in ceremony will have to be postponed for a day or two. Mr. Ames considers that when a big work is imposed the statutes should provide adequate time to do it..
