CHURCH AFFAIRS

ANNUAL REPORT OF ST. THOMAS'S The annual. report presented- by the Vestry, of St. Thomas's states .that tho attendances at both St. Thomas's and St Cuthbert's have been satisfactory, as also the number of Communicants, but we still hope for further improvement. The finances of the parish nave been well maintained considering the national crisis, and the financial year was conoluded with the small debit balance of £7. The general offerings show a decrease, for which the weather conditions in the third quarter of the year may have been largely responsible; but the special offertories increased considerably; these with the special contributions to the fund to paint the ohu'roh buildings, give a larger total than last year. The vicarage debt fund received several donations, which are much appreciated, as they enabled the vestry to redeem a debenture, and reduce the debt by £25. As the debentures mature next year ; an endeavour is being made to provide for some of them. With that object in view, a strong committee is arranging a bazaar to take place on Septembor 1, 2, and 3. St. Cutnbert'6 Churchroom debt has been decreased by £50. The stained glass window for the east end of the church has been made possible by the most generous donation of £80 by Mr. E. Collie, which with the balance at oredit of the fund, it is estimated will cover the cost of a suitable window. The painting of the church buildings was authorised by the vestry, the fund having reached within £20 of 'the amount required. A few minor repairs desirable before the painting commenced received attention. The parish magazine has not been quite a financial success, principally owing to lack of help to distribute and collect the subscriptions, many of which are in arrears. The extension of the paving stones to improve and mark the pathways to the church doors has been deferred pending probable alterations to the west porches, as also to obtain further subscribers. Improvement to the church entrances has received very serious consideration snd to the incoming vestry is recommended the advisability' of lengthening the west porch and the modification of tho north and and south porches. The church grounds show evidences of some kind attention, as several volunteers have different portions under their _ special care. The club had a fair session and its usefulness is commended for the cominj* winter, as also the parish social gatherings. Tho vestry record with respect and appreciation the labours of the late Mr. C. M. King, who was an ever ready worker. lie fulfilled the duties of a churchwarden and vestryman for many years. They also oxpress appreciation of the valuable help given by all during tho past twelve months, particularly the Venerable Archdeacon Fancourt, the Rev. D. H. Jenkins, the lay readers, tho choir, and all those who havo assisted in tho Sunday school or in any of tho church work.
