JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. (Tram Our Bctdftl Correspondent!.) CARTERTON. The annual meetiug of. tho parishioner? of St. Mark's Church was held on Monday evening,' the liev. 11. Young, vicar, presiding. The report and bal-ance-sheet were read and adopted. Officers as follows were elected:—Vicar's warden, Mr. H. 8. Moss; people's warden, Mr. i'\ Court; vestry, Messrs. W. Sorensen, V. Higgins, \\. B. O'Callagan, G. Leach, .1. Crewe, W. C. Ellis, and T. E. Mauusell.
Mr. Thomas Sparks, a very old resident of this district, died suddenly 0)1 Tuesday morning. 110 was seized with a fainting fit, and laid buck upon tho bed, expiring within an hour. Deceased was 75 years of age, and in his boyhood days resided at the Hutt, where he experienced tho troublesome times with the Maoris. Ho was ail Oddfellow of irmny years' standing, and a keen horticulturist- He was also associated with tho Carterton Hand for many years. He leaves a wife, and & family of two eons and one daughter. On Monday evening the members of the Carterton Brass Band presented Baiidsman Spooner with a silver-mount-ed oak salad bowl and severs, as a token of esteem upon his doparturo from Carterton to follow fanning at Wanganui Bandsman Spooner, who has Been associated tne hand for the past fifteen years, suitably acknowledged the gift.
FEATHERSTON.
A smoke concert was tendered by the citizens of Featherstou on Tuesday evening to Mr. D. Macdonakt, postmaster, and Mr. 0. Olsen, telephone exchange clerk, who are being transferred to other stations. Mr. M. B. Tait, chairman of the Town Board, presided -Mr. Macdonald took charge of the local' post office when it was built about six years ago, and consistent with the interests of the Department, has largely developed the usefulness of the postal and telephone services.

The Mauriceville County Council is contributing £5 per month towards the Belgian Relief fund. Nearly every local body in this district is now making a monthly contribution. There are at present twenty-four men employed on the Masterton water-exten-sion works. The heaviest portion of the work has been completed. Thomas Farmer, labourer, of Grcylown, has been adjudicated bankrupt. Fifteen infantry sergeants were dispatched .from here on Wednesday for the Trentbam camp. The Wairarapa Branch of the Teachers' Institute was recently asked to express an opinion on the question of reverting to the old system of term viz.-, a fortnight commencing in July. The institute has taken a ballot on the subject. Of eighty-four votes recorded,, fifty-three were in favour of the existing arrangement, while thirty-one favoured a reversion to the old system. it the annual meeting of parishion, ers of St. Matthew's Church a resolution was passed, to be sent to the Dioceson Synod, expressing the strong opinion "that women should be given a vote at parish meetings. The annual meeting of the Wairarap& i! Hockey Association was held on Tues. day evening. The following committee of management was appointed:— Messrs. W. Williams, T. Weston, G. Rigg, E. Tunnicliffe, and A. M. Vile. It was decided to commence the cup matches on May 13. The following vestry was elected at the meeting of St. Matthew's parishioners on .Tuesday evening:—Messrs. J. W. Blackman, T. T. Denbie, T, Evans, H. F. Green, E, Hale, W, G. HandNewton, J. B. Henry, R. E. Jones, E. 1?. Mountford, E. H. Waldington.
