The Hon. J, Allen went south to Dulledin last night. Tho Hon. W. H. Herries ' returned from a tour of inspection of the South Island railways yesterday. The Hon. A. L. Herdman, Minister, of Justice, has baen registered as u member of the Otago High School Old Boys' Company of toe New Zealand National Reserve. . f Mr. J. R. Palmer, Town Clerk, ban resumed his duties after his annual holiday. Lieutenant-Colonel C. ' Harcourt Turner,' of the sth (Wellington) Regiment, has been appointed commandant of the German prisoners' camp at Motuihi Island, Auckland, and will take .up his duties at once.' LieutenantColonel • Turner commanded a half battalion of the sth Regiment in the origiual Expeditionary Force for Samoa, and whilst there had. the misfortune to break bis leg, and was invalided home. Mr. Saxton, head accountant of Messrs. Kirkcaldie and Stains for the past thirteen years, ■ who is about to sever his connection jwith the firm, was the recipient of a tangible expression of appreciation from tho staff this afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Saxton leave for Queensland at an early date.
Mr. George Stoplienson, Who is leaving for Sydney to-day. has made arrangements with Mr. Frank Barton to produce an entirely 1 up-to-dato Maori team of twenty-four performers to tour New Zealand and Australia. Mr. W. A. Low is making the preliminary arrangements. The death occurred in Wellington or! Tuesday, after a short illness, of Mr. Williaru L. Nix, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Nix, well-known Bettlers at Tauherinikau. The deceased, wlio_ was 'only 30 years of age, leaves a widow, but no children, Mr. C. E. Cuming, editor of the Journal of Agriculture, has resigned from the Public Service to take over the editorship of the "New Zealand Farmer," in succession to the lato Mr. Hayward. Mr. Cuming, who has been' connected with journalism in Wellington and other parts of New Zealand for many years, I will commence his now duties at the end of May. Mr. C. M. Willis, late third engineer of the Maori, went/into camp at frontham' yesterday as a sergeant on probation.' His position in tho Union Steam Ship Company is being kept open forhim. Mr. J. .T. -Appleby, stationmaster at Dannevirke, died on Saturday morning. Some few weeks ago he was seized with a paralytic stroke, from which he never rallied. The late Mr. Appleby had been about thirty, years in the Dominion, and during the whole of that time he was in the service of the New Zealand Railways. . Tate, of the_ Wellington City Fire Brigade, is leaving 'for a month's holiday in Australia. Last evening he was presented by the members of tho Fire Polico with a travel-ling-rug. Mr. H. T. Ellingham, of Horoeka, has been elected unopposed as the Crown tenants' representative on the Wellington Land Board,
