THE COMING CARNIVAL
Attention is drawn in our advertising columns to a special meeting in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on r nday, with reference to the coming carnival in aid of Ne"v Zealand soldiers and sailors. ' The following telegram J have passed between His Excellency the Governor and the chairman of the committee, Mr. H. G. Hill:— "To His Excellency Lord Liverpool.— The executive of tne New Zealand Patriotic Society, Wellington branch, are organising a carnival on June 3, 75 per cent, of the proceeds oj, which will be invested as a fund for assisting incapacitated soldiers and sailors of New Zealand, and the widows and dependents of those men who have lost, their lives while on active service, and the remaining 25 per cent, being aevoted to the base hospital, Trentham. We respectfully ask Your Excellency to accept the position of patron and open the carnival, feeling sure tho objects will appeal to Your Excellency. We are aware of the restrictions placed upon birthday festivities at. thig time by His Majesty the King, but we would respectfully point out to Your Excellency that the objects of our efforts are suoh that we fee! sun His Majesty, the King would he pleased to approve.—H. G. Hill, chairman; -J. Lewis, hon. secretary." ' . From the Governor's Private Secret tary to Mr. H. G. Hill, Wellington — "Your telegram just received. His Excellency will be pleased to accord his patronage to your carnival, but ho cannot promise to open it, as he is not certain whether lie will be in Wellington on the date mentioned.—Gavin Hamilton, Private Secretary." It is hoped that a large attendance of workers in all departments will meet on Friday next, so as to ensure success for the undertaking.
