Time, lmin. 14sec. | NOTES ON THE RACINC, IBy Toiusrapii—ciDiMiaJ OrresDußiinnti Palmerston N., April 21. Nona of the well-performed division which was opposing Sir Donald in the Karero Hurdles looked ready to race, unless, perhaps, Aruako. The chestnut gelding was a hot favourite on the machine, and ho never looked anything but a winner. His jumping was perfect and gained him lengths at each fenco, while the slow pace over the first mils also assisted him. Killaloo was in charge until the last half-mile where the favourite took charge and won easily. The Diver was a poor third followed by Waipunoa, Cyra, ami Monologue. The time is an Australasian record.

The' Maiden Plate was generally regaided as lying between the two-year-olds. Tho Eiccarton trained Siiub, a stable mate of Wars'tep, was a good favourite, but after being favoured with a splendid run on the fence site could not catch Depredation (Campfire —Mosling) who seems to be a very solid sort, ancl struggled on well. Welcome Nugget, who comes from Hawera and is a half-brotlier to Coronetted, was well backed, but could only finish a poor third. Hinemoana showed pace for five furlongs, and Squadron was left at tho post.' The big handicap of tho day caused backers a lot of concern, and it was only after _somo spirited betting that Sunbird finished up a lew pounds bettor favourite than Square Deal and Birkliito, while Multiply. Rertrada, and Sir Alba, were also backed ovenly. At fclio start Want and Bcrtrada led Multiply, with Birldino and Square Deal at Iho mar of (Tie. field. Down the back I'm'sofillor joined tho leaders, but. rounding the bend Want fell a.wav and Rertrada was first into I lie straight, followed by Birklinc and Square Deal. Hie Gisborne representative headed Bertrada fifty yards off the post, and after a great finish won by- a head. Ra(w%

entrance, was third, then came Beldame and Bonny Kirk, Multiply, Sir Alba, and Sunbird. lmaroso ran a good race.

In the Sires' Produce Stakes Desert Go*d was a better favourite on the machine than the Chokebor© pair, Flying Start and Adjutant. At trie start the favourite was quickest to find her feet and she led down the back from Nones, Bonny Dream, and Eligible. Bounding tho bend Bonuy Dream fell away and I'lying Start niovod up, but entering uio straight Desert Gold had the race hi hand, and linisbing on well, she won nicely. Nones was a length clear of I'lying Start, and then camo Bligiblo and Bonny Dream. The tirno was a record lor the race and tlio course. Sylyamlalo was a solid favourite in tlio Hack Welter, but she got a vory bad run and was beaten into fourth wlace at the finish, Janitor inado most ol tho running till the straight, when i'jsher challenged him, and Hereford also camo on tho scene. In a good finish the latter won by a head, with Janitor two lengths awav, while tho favourite led tlio others "home. Midnight Star ran badly. ! hen the horses came into the bird"le k'up the crowd cheered \\a.rstep. She stripped well, and was sent out a good favourite. G'nortle also stripped well, but Balboa moved snort m big preliminarv, while Ventura also chopped about a lot. At the barrier the favourite drew the outside with 1 a,ylova. while Ventura was on the rails. Soon after leaving the tapes tho favourite got chopped out, and lost several lengths. Going out of the straight, Ventura was showing the way i r °m Pavlova and Balboa, while Chortle and \\ arstep brought up the rear. The latter moved up fast on the bond, and was first into tho straight, followed by ■Merry Roe and Chortle. At the distance the trio were in a line, with Balboa finishing fast oil tho outside. A sensational finish took place, and tho quartet finished within heads of each othehr. Chortle, who had got up on the fence tho whole way till tlie straight was reached, gained tho verdict in the fastest time on record, tho previous best being held by tho imported horso , - the Marsh. With a better run, the favourite would uudoubtedly have scored, as she had to cover more ground than anything in the race. Balboa was also unlucky in getting stopped on tho home turn.

Dinner Gong was a good favourite in the field in the Woodhey Hack Handicap, but any cbanco she had was spoilt by her whipping round when the tapes were released, and getting left at the post. Tyson made the running for half a mile, when Martlet and Ladogeur took charge, but once in the straight Zion and Fortify shot out, and the former won by a length, with Jean Laddo well clear of the others. The winner paid the biggest price of tho day.

The concluding event was run over half an hoijr late. King Chiara was a good favourite, with Tete-a-Tete, Chakwaua. and Grattan well backed. The favourite failed badly, but t)ie next Pair finished in the dividends. Tete-a-Tete aiu! Bradamante were first away, and led to the bend, where Chakwana displaced Bradamante, but had no chanco in the run home with TefeaTete. I'atronalo was fourth, just clear of Altcar.
